this morning
so sean and i get called down to fort edmonton park this morning to do a little heavy events demo for global news.i got to flip a caber on live tv,good thing i did not bobble it.they also got a piper down there.just before we go on,he fires up the pipes and they are loud down down 0n the park, they echo through the river valley, really cool actually.we were up the 1905 street down the way from the selkirk hotel.now the selkirk is a functioning hotel.the desk guy comes running out,i gues they do not like it when one starts honking an bag pipes at 630 in the morning and waking all the guests.it was amusing anyways.

the games
red deer fourth place
elorslie third place
only one of two to flip the caber at the former
tied first place caber at the latter
won heavy hammer at the latter
putting the stone and the weights for distance sucked at both games.
had blackberry ice cream at block 1912 after the games on sunday so being sore and exhausted was not so bad, good ice cream makes everything better.
do it all again on july 9th at fort edmonton whoo hoo

red deer highland games
ok i should be in bed now as i have to be up at 5.the fun part is i have to get the 220# granite marble out of my apartment into the back of my truck.
hah you all thought the name of my blog was a reference to me but yes there is a big granite ball and although i think stone lifting is the purest form of lifting, doing it at 6 a.m. is not a thrilling prospect.
we are using the sphere as a side contest,90 seconds to the shoulder for reps.apparently they drummed up about 3oo bucks for this little trial.the fun part is that this stone is like a big nasty cheese grator.this rock eats human flesh.people will be bleeding, god the things we do for fun.the funny thing is we wear our lifting and throwing scars with pride.
lifting stones is a thankless task.you do it because you can.every time you put a little air between the stone and the grass it is a temporary victory.unlike barbells, you cannot remove a little weight so you can get it up.you will either lift it or you will not and in the end the stone will win because stones stand the test of time just a little better than peoples.you lift stones knowing the day will come when you cannot move them anymore but untill then, you lift them because you can.

sunset
this was taken at the north end of the highlevel bridge in about 87-88.dating my self .there had been lots of forest fires so the sunsets were ultra saturated.i was on the south side and i glimpsed what was happening as the sun was going down so i raced to the north side of the bridge via the 105 st bridge(yes it was one way back then too)up throught the ledge grounds and parked my trusty datsun 510 wagon right where ezio farone park is now and blew off a roll at this magnificent spectacle.
bagpipes and more bagpipes
this weekend is red deer and ellerslie.nothing like back to back highland games.red deer is our provincial championship so everyone blows their load trying to get personal records and place high and sunday back here in elorslie, everyone has got nothing.it is always fun.as someone once said, you do not know what someone is made off till they compete.i always get my ass handed to me but a least i show up and in the big picture iguess that is all that counts.

summertime
this was up near mclennan, about 5 hours nw of edmonton.this pond is what is called a borrow pit.when they build roads they just dig a hole for the material they need for the foundation of the road.i naturally fills up and you get a pond that is super warm.i cannot even remember who the people were, friends of my cousins,it was 1991 but a cool pic though.

speed
tipton park- 109 st. and 80 ave
tipton park, this slide was about 18 feet high.i and my friends spent hours on it ,climbing it every which way, jumping of of it,do everything on it but sliding down it.they tore it down years ago, deemed it unsafe and too high.the world might be a safer place now but it is also certainly less interesting.
